Seasons change
Last night we enjoyed the first true autumn temperatures of the season. By late evening the mercury had already dipped into the lower fifties, which is darned cold after the past few nights of sticky mid-seventies. But I threw open the windows and let the freezing (it felt freezing!) air rush in. And then I piled on the blankets and burrowed in for a good pre-winter’s night sleep.
It’s times like that when I think autumn is my favorite season of the year. Until spring arrives after a long winter. Then it’s tempting to say that spring is my favorite season of the year. I think, with the exception of summer, the other three seasons are my favorites when they first arrive. So, for now, autumn is my favorite and it’s here, which means now is the time to make applesauce and bake apple pies. That’s my autumn ritual. Soon the first snow flakes will fall and I’ll be wildly excited, until that excitement gives way to longing thoughts of spring after 5 feet of snow flakes have piled up. And so it goes, year after year.
For a while longer, anyway.

Well, you know Fall is my favorite season here in NE. You have listened to me whine all these years how it’s the only time of the year I got home sick LOL.
I made the BIG mistake of sleeping with the windows open the night before last because it was just cool enough not to have the AC on and just warm enough to not freeze with them open. At about 4:30 AM a skunk decided to let loose it’s most wonderful scent! Woo, what a rude awakening that was for everyone in the house. Of course I spent and hour in the bathroom over the commode until E and the kids could get the stench out of the house so I could breath! (for the people that don’t know me, I am VERY allergic to skunk scent) I will not make that mistake again for a long time! Yeash.
You poor thing. What a way to wake up! We, on the other hand, have been completely free of skunks this year. No skunk odor nor have I seen a single skunk out in the evenings anywhere around here. It’s like they all packed up their bags and moved at the end of last summer.
OH no no, if I remember correctly, early Fall is when they come out a lot. I could be wrong but, I think that is why I could never enjoy sleeping with the windows open on a crisp night.
Oh trust me, after having had to scrub Terry down with gallons of white vinegar after her skunk catching incident, in the early portion of last summer, I can guarantee they were around from early spring through late autumn. And then there was the one who nightly visited to eat sunflower seeds until Terry scared it away. Not to mention the one who lived under the deck for a couple of weeks, leaving a gross musky scent behind that lingered and lingered. Last year and the year before were very skunky summers. Skunks were around until at least the mid portion of October as I do recall one gnawing on the pumpkin on the front porch and the one I whacked in the butt when I opened the front door. (It was eating out of Stinky’s dish before we adopted him.) Then they go away for the winter. This spring they didn’t come back for some reason. Don’t know why, but I’m very happy not to be tripping over skunks when I walk out the door in the evenings.
