I can think of several ways this could have been handled differently, leading to a satisfying conclusion for everyone concerned. Why are school officials so damned dumb?

COLUMBUS, Georgia (AP)—A high school student was suspended for 10 days for refusing to end a cell phone call with his mother, a soldier serving in Iraq, school officials said.
The 10-day suspension was issued because Kevin Francois was “defiant and disorderly” and was imposed in lieu of an arrest, Spencer High School assistant principal Alfred Parham said.

Rules are made to be broken under extraordinary circumstances. I would be more worried about a kid who passively said “yes, ma’am, your rules are more important than hanging on to a phone call from my mother in Iraq.” I don’t find his defiance and anger in the least unexpected or unusual in this situation. What did school officials realistically expect? Their response was not very bright from beginning to end.
